Report: Fifth of Indiana in `exceptional' drought

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- An updated federal report shows that Indiana's drought continues to worsen with nearly one-fifth of the state now in the grips of an "exceptional" drought.
Thursday's updated U.S. Drought Monitor map shows that despite rainfall in the past week about 19 percent of Indiana is experiencing an exceptional drought, which is the map's worst drought category. That parched area runs from southwestern Indiana into western and central portions of the state.
An extreme drought covers about 58 percent of the state in an area spanning from the southwestern corner through the central counties to far northeastern Indiana. Overall, about 87 percent of Indiana is now facing at least a severe drought.
The federal government has declared a natural disaster in 64 Indiana counties.
