LINTON, Ind. (AP) -- An eight-hour standoff with an armed man who held his three children inside a home in southern Indiana ended when the man fell asleep, police said Friday.
State police Sgt. Curt Durnil said officers went to Ian Long's house about 3:30 a.m. Friday after receiving a report he had been involved in a knife fight in Linton, about 85 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
Long, 38, barricaded himself inside his home when officers arrived. He sent his 10-year-old son out about 6 a.m. out with a two-way radio so he could communicate with police, Durnil said. The child was not allowed to return to the house and other family members took care of him. While police were negotiating with Long, two shots were fired inside the house about 7 a.m., Durnil said. Long allowed his 12- and 14-year-old children to leave the house about 11 a.m.
Police continued to negotiate with Long until just after 1 p.m.
Officers then entered the house and found him asleep, Durnil said.
Officers took Long into custody on a warrant charging him with intimidation and removed one firearm from the home, Durnil said. The Greene County prosecutor will decide whether to file any additional charges, he said.
