TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) -- The winter's mild weather may cut short Indiana's maple syrup harvest this year.
Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department Superintendent Keith Ruble tells the Tribune-Star ( http://bit.ly/AcSu9Y ) he's happy to see cold weather in the forecast. But he worries another warm spell could bring an early spring and halt maple trees' production of the sugary water that's turned into maple syrup.
Ruble says he's already seen wildflowers blossoming in the western Indiana county's parks and once the daffodils hit their peak, syrup season is over. Ideal maple syrup weather is 28 degrees in the evening and 35 to 45 degrees during the day.
Last year, employees at a Terre Haute park tapped more than 200 gallons of syrup from trees to sell for a fundraiser.
