Lugar backs Obama's choice for judge

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) - Republican Senator Richard Lugar is supporting President Barack Obama's nomination for a federal appeals court judge.

The president nominated Indianapolis Judge David Hamilton, to the Chicago-based court.

Senator Lugar says Hamilton's rulings have been within the judicial mainstream and Republican's have misconstrued Hamilton's decisions on issues like prayer in the statehouse and abortion counseling.

Some Republicans say Hamilton has improperly pushed a political agenda as judge.

The U.S. Senate could vote today, on whether to stop a filibuster on the nomination.
