GARY, Ind. (AP) - Residents in Gary, Indiana who are angry that trash collection
stopped in the city this week, are calling on fellow residents to
dump their garbage at City Hall until the service resumes.
More than 50 people gathered at a rally Tuesday, the second day
that scheduled trash pickups were not made after the private
company hired by the city was told to stop.
In October, Mayor Rudy Clay laid off about 50 city trash collectors and hired Allied Waste Services. But the City Council voted 6-3 last week against the deal after a judge ordered its approval was needed for the $12 monthly trash fee residents began paying last fall.
Clay says the private firm has done the job more efficiently
than city workers.
