Indiana speaker claims supermajority

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma says fellow Republicans have won a supermajority in the 100-member House that will allow them to conduct business even if Democrats stage future walkouts.

Bosma tweeted early Wednesday that the GOP had gained nine seats in the Indiana House, giving the party a two-thirds supermajority of 69 seats. Republicans needed 67 seats in the chamber to conduct business even if no Democrats are present.

Two Indiana House races remain too close to call, with the candidates in both races separated by less than 100 votes.

Indiana Republicans' push for a supermajority follows walkouts by House Democrats the past two years to stall action on the GOP-backed right-to-work law and other labor and education proposals. Republicans had a 60-40 House advantage both of those years
