HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - The family of a Lansing, Ill., man who killed himself in the
Lake County, Ind., Jail claims in a lawsuit that he wasn't properly
monitored even though a judge had warned he was a suicide risk.
Federal Magistrate Paul Cherry said jail officials should put
39-year-old Adekunle Odumabo under suicide watch after he said
repeatedly in court that he wanted to die. Four days later, Odumabo
was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell.
An attorney for the sheriff and the jail warden says Odumabo
was evaluated by a mental health center and jail officers were told
he could be removed from suicide watch.
His family is seeking unspecified damages in his April 2007
death.
