INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana leaders and students are marking the state's 196th birthday with a series of events at the Statehouse and other state buildings.

Tuesday marks the 196 years since Indiana became the 19th state.

It might not carry the grandeur of the upcoming bicentennial, which features ceremonies and events being coordinated by Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and former congressman Lee Hamilton. But Tuesday's events will feature more than 700 fourth-grade students and honor the winners of an essay contest writing on "What Indiana Means to Me.".

The state library is leading events at the Statehouse, State Library, State Museum and the Indiana Historical Society. The events start at noon.
