INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Firefighters had to scramble to safety after a staircase collapsed while they were battling an Indianapolis apartment building blaze.
Indianapolis fire Lt. Larry Tracy says crews found heavy flames and smoke when they arrived early Saturday at the International Village Apartments complex on the city's west side. Crews called a second alarm for additional firefighters and needed about 90 minutes to put out the fire.
Tracy says a staircase collapsed during the blaze with some firefighters on the building's second floor and no other way down. Crews used ground ladders to help those firefighters to safety.
One woman who lived in the building was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The fire's cause wasn't immediately determined.
