KENDALLVILLE, Ind.  An explosion that could be heard from up to 3 miles away rocked one facility in Kendallville Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Kendallville Fire Department, they received several 911 calls about an explosion at the Metal Shred Industries in the East Industrial Park just after 3:15 p.m.

When they arrived at the facility, the sprinkler system was on and there was a large amount of smoke.

Crews searched the building and discovered  a small fire inside the facility’s dust collection hopper which was allowed to burn itself out.

Investigators believe the explosion was caused when something got into that hopper and caused a chemical reaction.

No one was injured but the building did have significant damage to its siding and roof.

The incident remains under investigation.
