DNR: Hoosiers need to be careful on frozen bodies of water

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WANE) The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding Hoosiers of the potential hazards related to frozen bodies of water this winter.

While citizens are out enjoying fishing, skating, hiking, or just sliding around on frozen ponds and lakes the DNR reminds Hoosiers to ensure the fun they are having is safe.

The DNR has the following tips for people who are considering standing or walking on to a seemingly frozen body of water:

  1. No ice is safe ice.
  2. At least 4 inches of ice is recommended for safe ice fishing; 5 inches for snowmobiling.
  3. If you don’t know….don’t go.
  4. Wear lifejackets or flotation coats.
  5. Carry ice hooks and rope gear.

Some bodies of water will appear to be frozen solid but actually can have thin ice in several unsuspecting areas. Flowing water, such as rivers and streams, should be avoided when covered by a layer of ice. Water that is surrounded by sand many times freezes with inconsistencies.
