Coats, Stutzman issue statements on gun control proposals

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WANE)  Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.)   issued the following statement Wednesday regarding President Obama’s gun control proposals:

“The Newtown shooting was a horrific tragedy that had an impact on all Americans but especially every parent, teacher and student, and it is right for our country to reflect on how we can prevent such events in the future.

“As we learn more about the president’s proposals, we must protect Second Amendment rights and ensure the federal government does not punish responsible gun owners. I will not support legislation or executive actions that would affect gun ownership rights for law-abiding citizens, including any assault weapons ban.

“Laws alone cannot eliminate all acts of violence. As Americans we need to examine a culture that increasingly glamorizes violence and determine how we can better identify and address mental illness in our society.”

Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind) issued the following statement:

“The Founders enshrined the American right to keep and bear arms in the Constitution.  The Obama Administration has a long track record of advocating policies that infringe on the liberty and freedom of the citizenry and, unfortunately, today’s proposals follow the same pattern.

“As the father of two young sons, I will work to ensure our nation’s children are safe while also protecting the rights and freedoms of future generations. As one who swore to uphold the Constitution, I will oppose the President’s assault-weapons ban. I also urge the President to join me and parents across the country in condemning Hollywood’s irresponsible glorification of violence.”

Senator Joe Donnelly (D-Ind), in a visit to Fort Wayne Wednesday, was less clear about where he stood:

"My feeling is this: I'm a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.  At the same time, I'm a dad.   Every family ought to know that their child that goes to school can come home from school safely, whether it's grade school or college."
