Happy ending comes for dog forced to fight during Attica animal shelter break-in

ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI) - There's a happy ending for one of the dogs injured when an Attica animal shelter was broken into and animals were forced to fight each other.

"Where are you going Chopper? You going for a ride?" said Chopper's new mom, Jill.

Chopper is off for the ride of a lifetime.

After spending more than a year in Attica's Paws 'n' Claws Animal Shelter, Chopper was adopted and taken home Monday evening. And while he left with six kids, attention is something he will never be deprived of.

"At first, we were going to get a different dog because we weren't real sure what we wanted," said Jill.

But when the family met the ever-so-friendly Chopper, they knew he was the one.

At first, the family didn't know that Chopper was one of the two dogs forced to fight during a break-in last month at the shelter.

And although Chopper was leaving with some stitches still in, the family's determined to give him a loving, caring future.

"We just feel like we're giving him something and he's going to give us something too. We really wanted to adopt a dog and do something for the community," said Jill.

Flynn, the other dog forced to fight, still needs the community's help. He's is still up for adoption at Paws 'n' Claws.

Co-founder Melinda Bryant said adopting, not only a dog like Flynn, but any animal, can be rewarding.

"It is my 100-percent opinion that a shelter dog is the best pet you can ever get. I don't believe that they forget where they came from and what their life could be like if you haven't taken them home," said Bryant.

Bryant said the support from the community has been amazing. She said the shelter has received donations, phone calls and letters, some even from other states.

She said they hope to find the persons responsible for the break-in. For now, she's just happy other dogs have recovered and seemed like themselves again.

If you are interested in adopting Flynn, volunteers at the shelter said he should go to a one-pet home. They said since the break-in, he's had a few issues being around other dogs.
