The Republic of South Africa has given U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar the Mandela Freedom Statuette for his "exceptional contribution to the struggle for the attainment of non-racial, free and democratic South Africa."
South Africa Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool presented the award in the name of Nelson Mandela.
Rasool says Lugar relentlessly fought apartheid and helped to usher in a non-racial democratic South Africa.
He added that Lugar went against both the prevailing thinking in his political party and the White House.
As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations in 1986, Lugar went against the Reagan administration and helped lead the fight to impose economic sanctions on South Africa's apartheid government.
