SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Two people have died and one has been critically injured in a fire at a South Bend apartment building.

Firefighters arriving at the blaze about 4:30 a.m. Sunday found the first floor of the building engulfed in flames. South Bend Fire Chief Steve Cox says first responders quickly pulled two children from the fire.

Cox tells WSBT-TV and the South Bend Tribune details on the victims are being withheld pending notification of relatives.

He says the cause of the fire might not be known for days.

The apartment building on the city's southeast side is government-subsidized and operated by the South Bend Housing Authority.
