FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A huge tire fire at Mid American Steel on Moeller Road in New Haven could be seen for miles across Fort Wayne on Wednesday.
Around 1 p.m. a heavy equipment crane came in contact with power lines, and created an arc that ignited 1,000 square feet of tires stored outside the facility.
Firefighters had to wait to operate in the immediate area until AEP arrived, because the power lines were still energized.
Michael Miller, assistant chief with the FWFD, said the fire was contained pretty quickly, and the large amount of smoke is typical when tires catch on fire.
New Haven and Southwest Fire Departments also assisted in fighting the fire.
Crews will remain on scene to control any spot fires and run off created by the foam that was used to fight the fire.
