OSSIAN, Ind. (WANE) - The state fire marshal will help determine what caused a fire at a longtime Ossian business.
A city police officer noticed smoke coming from Ossian Furniture, 10018 North State Road 1, around ten Thursday night. When fire crews arrived, it was coming from eaves in the front and back of the building. It took about 25 minutes for firefighters to put the fire out. Flames were contained to the ceiling in the front part of the store.
Ossian Fire Department Chief Ben Fenstermaker said it appears the fire was probably electrical in nature. The Indiana Fire Marshal's Office will have to confirm that.
Kevin Smith has owned Ossian Furniture for three years, but it's been open since 1963. He said fire, smoke and water damage is contained to one area of the store and didn't spread to other nearby businesses.
"It could have been a whole lot worse. No question about it, we're blessed and fortunate that this is all that it was," Smith said.
