WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - West Lafayette has unveiled a new safety plan aimed at encouraging children to walk to school.

City officials said the installation of school zone and crosswalk beacons near elementary schools is part of a larger safety plan released recently.

The Safe Routes to School plan is funded by a federal grant and includes ideas for traffic enforcement, new safety features and improvements to paths and sidewalks near school zones.

Officials said the plan also focuses on the health benefits of walking or biking and includes suggestions for curriculum-based education for children.

City and school officials said they'll begin implementing major strategies this fall.
