FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Health experts are working to reduce the number of drownings by teaching students about water safety.
Parkview Integrative Community Nursing put on a special program for second graders at Brentwood Elementary in Fort Wayne on Monday.
ThinkFirst helps teach children about how to prevent drowning and how to use care when jumping or diving into the water. The kids got to take home a backpack full of information to help keep the entire family safe.
"They really love the backpacks and so we're hoping that really engages them to be able to go home and share the information and be excited about it and take that message with them," said Connie Kerrigan from Parkview Community Nursing.
According to Parkview, about 6,000 people in this country drown every year.
