FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Fort Wayne police are seeing an increase in the number of reports of drivers who are ignoring school bus stop arms on undivided four-lane highways.
Undivided four-lane highways are ones that don't have a barrier or median separating the two directions of traffic. Examples of such roadways given by the Fort Wayne Police Department include Aboite Center Road, Illinois Road, East Rudisill Boulevard, Spy Run Avenue and Hobson Road.
A driver that passes a school bus that is stopped on a road with its stop arm extended could face a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $1000 fine. If someone is injured as a result of the infraction, the potential jail time goes up to one year and the fine jumps to $5,000.
Fort Wayne police will step up patrols in the areas where transportation officials have noted an increase in stop arm violations.
