Ohio school board considers arming staff

EDGERTON, Ohio (WANE) - The Edgerton School District in Ohio is considering arming staff members.

According to Superintendent Andy Morr, the Edgerton Board of Education discussed the options of arming staff at Monday night's meeting.

"It's an option that all school school districts of the state of Ohio can do, can explore, and it's an option we're choosing to do so," said Superintendent Morr.

In the discussions on Monday, it was proposed that staff receive concealed weapons training as well as training by the Ohio Tactical Defense Institute , which also trains police officers.

"If I'm not available or I'm not here, having alternatives, is really important to make sure we're prepared and ready," said Matthew Krill, who's the School's Resource Officer and the only armed staff member in the school district.

No resolutions were passed but the district plans on speaking with legal counsel to verify what options are available to them.

Morr hopes that by the next school board meeting on Feb 11th, there will be some resolutions and workable legal advice that will allow the school board to vote on and implement this new policy.

This news comes less than a week after another Ohio district's board members approved a measure for some staff members to carry concealed handguns on Montpelier Exempted Village Schools ' property during school hours.
