Gregg talks education at Ft. Wayne stop

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Indiana gubernatorial candidate John Gregg stopped by Fort Wayne Wednesday to talk education.

Gregg met with teachers at the Pint and Slice restaurant downtown.

When it comes to making real changes in education, Gregg said the state can't just rely on Indianapolis.

"When you think about doing reform, where we look in Indianapolis for the best answers, that's not the way you do it," said Gregg. "You do it from the bottom up. You look to the classroom teacher. You look to that great middle school principal. You look to that school superintendent to help you come up with ideas to make the schools better."

Gregg has highlighted the need for a better-educated workforce in order to attract good jobs in his campaign, but has been short on specifics. On his website, Gregg puts his view on education this way:

"We’ve got to start thinking more about the next generation than the next election. We need to make sure college is affordable for any Hoosier who wants to go, but we also need to have options for kids who want to follow other paths.

We have amazing opportunities here in Indiana, but we need to reach out and grab them.  However, we won’t be able to do that until we stop all the fighting for fighting’s sake and start worrying more about the next generation than the next election."

Gregg is running against Republican Mike Pence and Libertarian Rupert Boneham in the governor's race.
