FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne Community Schools administrators have suspended one of their assistant principals with pay after drug possession allegations came to their attention on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Krista Stockman says someone contacted the principal about Shadwaynn Curry’s arrest, who in turn alerted them.
“Because she is an administrator, it is a suspension with pay, but that's just because of contract and the way things work,” explained Stockman. “It's not any intent to say we believe she's guilty or innocent or anything like that; it’s just the way it works under contract.”
Curry became assistant principal at Memorial Park Middle School in 2006. She was first hired as a substitute in 1993.
Stockman said employees go through a thorough background check and drug test before they are hired, but random drug tests are not given to employees. She said the district has to wait and see how things play out in the judicial system before they can take any more action. The district wants parents to know they’re taking this very seriously.
“At this point we have no information that there was anything inappropriate happening at school that students were ever in any sort of danger or anything like that,” Stockman said. “Certainly if they have any information I’m sure the authorities would love to hear about it. We would like to hear about it, but that's our primary concern is to make sure the students were fine at all times and at this point we're making sure they stay focused on their academics.”
Curry’s husband was also arrested on drug related charges , but Stockman said regardless of what happens to him, the district can only discipline Curry on her actions.
