Police: Woman vandalized church, smeared blood

GARRETT, Ind. (WANE)--Police in Garrett arrested an intoxicated 18-year-old woman early Saturday morning after they said she broke a large church window, vandalized a postal service vehicle, and smeared blood all over the front doors of the Garrett Post Office.

According to Garrett Police Department, at 4:26 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to loud banging and crashing noises near downtown Garrett.  When they got on scene, they said they found Maitlin Craig, 18, covered in blood.

Police say Craig had broken a large window at the Garrett United Methodist Church.  Church members found bloody hand marks on three different entryways to the building.  The members said they found a rock used to prop the door open covered in blood and think Craig used it to break the outer pane of a large double-paned window.  The damage to the window is estimated at $7,000.

Officers say Craig walked a block to the post office nearby.  There, police say she vandalized the side-mirrors on some postal vehicles, knocked over and bled on parking signs, and smeared blood on the front door of the post office.

Officers said Craig had lacerations to her palm and skin missing on her big toes like she had been hitting and kicking the buildings.  A portable breath test showed the 18-year-old’s blood alcohol content at a 0.18.

"[She] didn’t understand what she had done, did not express any knowledge of what she had done, but she was obviously highly intoxicated," said Keith Hefner, Garrett police chief.

Hefner said Craig had reportedly been drinking a mixture of Vodka and Red Bull and had been hanging out with some friends who lived nearby.

Craig has been arrested and charged with a felony count of institutional criminal mischief for the church vandalism, criminal mischief, and illegal consumption of alcohol.
