ANGOLA, Ind. (WANE) - An Angola woman who pretended to have cancer so she could acquire money from people has pleaded guilty to felony theft, according to KPC News , a WANE-TV partner in news.
Video: In April 2012, in an exclusive NewsChannel 15 interview, Landis said she had a mental disorder that made her truly believe she was sick.
The newspaper reports April Landis, 27, Angola, pleaded guilty to a Class D charge of felony theft Monday in Steuben Superior Court.
Landis told people she had a rare form of brain cancer. When a local newspaper ran a story about her illness, a local benefit was held to raise money for treatment in March. Speculation about her illness lead Angola police to hold an investigation. According to Angola Police Department detectives, Landis told them she did not have cancer and lied about the entire situation.
Landis has already returned some of the donated money. KPC News reports after the initial investigation, $5,212 was returned though investigators thought there could be more.
KPC News reports a plea agreement was taken under advisement and if Steuben Superior Court Judge William Fee accepts the plea deal, three additional charges of felony theft will be dismissed.
Landis has agreed to pay restitution for all the counts pending against her, according to the paper.
If the judge rejects the plea deal, Landis could face a maximum three years in jail. A decision on the plea agreement is expected Oct. 29.
