PERU, Ind. (WANE)  Troopers arrested two men Wednesday night after stopping a driver whose headlight was out.

At around 9:20 p.m., police pulled over the SUV on U.S. 31 near State Road 218. While speaking with the driver, Richard Beets, 60, of Peru, the trooper said he saw indicators that criminal activity might be taking place and requested a narcotics-detecting police dog.

The K9 gave a positive alert to the odor of illegal narcotics inside the vehicle. During a search of the SUV, officers allegedly found two film canisters that they believe contained crack cocaine.

Beets was taken to the Miami County Jail on two felony charges for possession of cocaine and operating a vehicle after having been deemed a habitual traffic violator.

The passenger, James Jones, 62, also of Peru, was also arrested on two felony charges: possession of cocaine and maintaining a common nuisance.
