HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- A 16-year-old boy from Andrews is said to have taken his mother's Corvette early Sunday morning without permission. He totaled the vehicle and was sent to the hospital.
Andrews Town Marshal Van Juillerat said around midnight, the boy was following his friend heading east on 200 North in Huntington County. He went to pass his friend, but saw another vehicle heading west on 200 North.
The 16-year-old swerved to miss the oncoming vehicle and lost control. The town marshal said the Corvette slammed into a large utility pole on its passenger side.
The teenager is said to have walked out of the vehicle with minor injuries. He was sent to the hospital in fair condition.
Juillerat said the boy's mother was thankful he's ok, but very upset about the car.
"I believe it was a 1996 Corvette T-Top. [It was] her pride and joy," said Juillerat. "When I spoke with the mother, she calmed down a little bit. And they understand they're fortunate that they still have a son to deal with."
Police say the 16-year-old does not have a driver's license or permit. He is expected to be charged with reckless driving and driving without a license. He was the only person inside the Corvette.
