FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)--Surveillance pictures of Friday's attempted robbery at Freedom Financial Credit Union show a customer preparing to elbow the suspect in the head.
A little before 10:00 a.m. Friday , a man walked into the credit union and demanded money. Surveillance pictures taken every thee seconds show he was wearing a bright green surgical mask and a brown hooded sweatshirt.
An employee at the credit union said she heard loud screaming. A customer had yelled, "You're not going to rob my credit union!"
According to Fort Wayne police, the customer, "spun on the suspect and struck him with his elbow, knocking him to the ground."
About three seconds later, the surveillance pictures show an empty credit union lobby. Police said the robbery suspect ran out empty handed and the customer ran after him. The suspect got away in a nearby vehicle.
The customer gave police a suspect description, vehicle description, and possible license plate number.
Later Friday morning, police arrested Michael Boester, 34, and charged him with attempted robbery. Officers also arrested Molly Hutmacher, 23, and charged her with attempted robbery and neglect of a dependent. Hutmacher was in the get-away vehicle along with a two-year-old toddler.
In true hero's form, police and employees at the credit union wouldn't reveal the identity of the man who stopped the robbery.
Police say it's very dangerous to intervene during an attempted robbery like this one, even though the suspect didn't have any weapons on him. Officers encourage good witnesses, but say it's up to each individual person to decide what to do in that situation.
