KNAPP LAKE, Ind. (WANE) - Observant neighbors are credited with helping stop a man suspected of breaking and entering into a residence near Knapp Lake Thursday evening.

According to police, neighbors called 911 after they saw what they believed to be a breaking and entering in progress.

Around 8:30 p.m., officers with the Noble County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police arrived at a home in the 0600 block of South Wildwood Drive at Knapp Lake. Officers spoke with callers who told police they believed the man was still inside.

A short time later, Troopers surrounded the home and were able to observe a man inside, according to a report. The man was taken into custody without incident.

Police arrested Stephen R. Lawrence, 50, Elwood, on preliminary charges of residential entry (Class D felony) and criminal trespass (Class A misdemeanor).

Lawrence is currently being held at the Noble County Jail on an $8,000 cash bond.
