Victim identified in Broadway homicide

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The Allen Co. Coroner's office has identified the victim of Monday's homicide near downtown Fort Wayne at Antiques on Broadway

That victim is J. Robert Shimer, 58, of Fort Wayne.  The coroner said Shimer died from blunt force trauma to the head.  He is the 30th homicide victim in Allen County in 2012.

Just after 5 Monday evening, officers were dispatched to 1115 Broadway for an incident at the store.

Fort Wayne police said a customer walked into the store during business hours and found an adult male suffering from injuries. The customer was not able to locate another employee inside the business.

Police said the customer then went to a nearby business and called 911.

"A common question that would be asked is is this a robbery that went bad? At this time we have nothing to indicate either way if it was a robbery or not a robbery," said Sgt. Mark Brooks, a Public Information Officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Police did not have any suspect information.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.
