FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – UPDATE: The name of the man shot and killed in the 900-block of Herman Street Saturday afternoon has been released. The Allen County coroner's office said he is Jerry W. Barker, 43, of Fort Wayne. The coroner's report said he died from gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
Previously posted story:
Fort Wayne police said a man was found dead in the 900 block of Herman Street after a woman called 911 and reported hearing gunshots in the area Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the shots were heard around 1 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene, the man was found dead inside sitting in an idling vehicle on Herman Street with an apparent gunshot wound.
Police said the woman who initially called police said after she heard the shots, she saw the victim bleeding and then saw another man running from the area.
Neighbors are on edge and don't feel safe.
"I have a family, two daughters, you know, I don't want them getting shot by some idiot running up and down the street thinking they have the right to take someone else's life," said Robert Prugh.
His wife and sister-in-law, Ami Prugh and Mandy Locastro, were not there when the shooting happened, but Locastro's children were.
"They didn't hear nothing today, and I'm glad, I'm really glad," said Locastro.
Police still have not released a motive in the case, but Locastro says there's nothing that would justify it. She and Prugh are planning to move their family out of that neighborhood.
At this time, police do not have any suspects. The name of the victim has not been released. If you have any information regarding this case, call Fort Wayne Police or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP.
