Mother of kids strapped to car hood speaks

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)--The mother of three of the four kids strapped to the hood of a moving car Monday speaks with NewsChannel 15 in an exclusive on-camera interview.

Police said around 5:30 p.m. Monday, someone called 911 to report that a man and a woman had strapped a four, five, six, and seven-year-old to the hood of a car and left the Belmont Beverage parking lot at 2116 Fairfield Ave.  A U.S. Marshal stopped the vehicle a couple blocks away from the liquor store.  Police arrested the driver, Aaron Stefanski and passenger, Jessica Clark.  Stefanski was said to have a blood alcohol content of .17%.  The kids were not hurt.

Sarah is the mother of the three youngest kids involved and did not want to give her last name.  She said she and Stefanski are divorced and he had the kids on visitation.

Sarah said she was shocked to hear her ex-husband do something like that.  She said she won't let her husband see the kids ever again.

"If the courts tell me I have to, I will," Sarah said.  "I feel for him.  I know he loves his children.  But as a mother, he put my children in harms way.  He's done."

Though her kids weren't physically hurt, she worries about the long-term effects surrounding the traumatic incident.

"They seem to be ok now.  But I think in a couple weeks or months when they realize dad's not coming back, that's when we're going to have a whole new set of problems," Sarah said.
