FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A man is undergoing a mental health evaluation after holding Fort Wayne police at bay for almost three hours Sunday morning.
SWAT members and police officers were called to a home in the 1000 block of Home Avenue at about 12:30 a.m.
They were told a man was armed with a knife and crossbow, threatening to harm a person in the house and kill himself. He was also throwing fireworks out of the house. Several neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.
The Emergency Services Team and Crisis Response Team were called to assist in the investigation. A negotiator talked with the suspect and successfully maintained communication with him until he surrendered about three hours later.
The man was taken into custody without incident and was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. Two other people who were inside the house made it out safely. No injuries were reported at the scene.
The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating.
