ASHLEY, Ind. (WANE) - The Ashley Police Department is investigating an incident from early Wednesday morning after a man evaded an officer and crashed his motorcycle.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, an officer with the Ashley Police Department attempted to stop a motorcycle for a traffic infraction on North Grand Avenue in Ashley, according to a police report.

The report said the motorcycle then accelerated at a high rate of speed heading north on County Road 400 West. The driver then turned west on County Road 700 South and the officer lost sight of the motorcycle.

The officer then located the motorcycle off the road of C.R. 700 South approximately 200 feet from County Road South 800 West, according to the report. The officer then located the driver, Howard W. Squier II, age and location not provided, "some distance" from the motorcycle, according to the report.

Squier was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.

Investigators said Squier was not wearing a helmet and do not know if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
