GARRETT, Ind. (WANE) - A 19-year-old was arrested for OWI and leaving the scene of an accident after causing damage to a garage, driving into a cornfield and hitting several trees and a utility pole all before her car caught on fire Saturday morning.
DeKalb County Police say around 5:30 a.m., 19-year-old Katelyn
S. Kimmel was driving her 2004 Mazda M6 south bound on County Road
7 near Garrett when she lost control of her car and drove into a
field on the east side of the road. Kimmel's car continued to
slide sideways and crossed a driveway in the 5100 block of County
Road 7 before coming to rest in the front yard.
Kimmel then backed into the home causing damage to the
garage. She then drove down the long driveway, crossing the
roadway and drove into a cornfield on the west side of the
road. She was able to get her car out of the cornfield and
drove north on County Road 7 before stopping at the Baker Street
and Quincy Street intersection in Altona.
Kimmel made a right hand turn onto Quincy Street and
continued east bound until she was unable to negotiate the sharp
right hand curve at Quincy and Union and went straight through the
curve, hitting a Garrett City utility pole.
After hitting the pole, Kimmel hit several small trees before
coming to rest.
Kimmel's car caught on fire, but was able to be helped out by
police. The 19-year-old is suffering from a broken right forearm
and pain to her neck.
