DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division arrested two former police officers and charged them with theft after a nine-month-long investigation.

Indiana State Police Detective Kevin Smith said Michael Reneau, 40, had been in charge of screening military surplus items for potential use by the Garrett Police Department. He then allegedly used his position to take the surplus items and sell them, keeping the money for himself.

Sean Kahkola, 42, formerly of the Auburn Police Department, allegedly perpetrated the same crime on two different occasions.

Police said Reneau was arrested Monday afternoon and incarcerated in the DeKalb County Jail on one count of theft, a Class D felony.

Kahkola turned himself into the DeKalb County Jail Monday night at approximately 8 p.m. and is being incarcerated on two counts of theft, both Class D felonies.
