INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Marion County sheriff in Indianapolis has fired a deputy and asked the FBI to investigate him for a possible civil rights violation for beating a handcuffed jail inmate.
A warrant was issued Friday for 28-year-old David Carrico charging him with felony official misconduct and misdemeanor counts of battery and false reporting.
Sheriff John Layton says Carrico assaulted 43-year-old Harry Hooks on May 20. Surveillance video shows Hooks called deputies "racists" but did resist arrest, and Carrico threw Hooks to the floor, got on top of him, and forced him against the floor. Other deputies came to Hooks' aid.
Layton says Carrico contends he took down Hooks because the prisoner pulled away violently.
Carrico doesn't have a published telephone number and he couldn't be reached for comment.
