New court date for accused accomplice in police shooting

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - The woman accused of being an accomplice in a shooting that hurt the Waterloo deputy marshal was granted a continuance in court Friday morning.

NewsChannel 15's Alyssa Ivanson was at King's court appearance on Friday, October 5. King was granted a continuance and the new trial date is set for May 6-10, 2013.

Julie King is charged with one count of felony murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and aiding in attempted murder. King's accused of taking part in a shooting in December of 2011 that hurt the deputy marshal and left another man dead.

Her trial was originally scheduled for June 18-22 of this year, but in April it was rescheduled for October so the defense and prosecution could have more time to prepare. It is now scheduled for October 22 to 26.

According to investigators, sometime before 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2011, King and Ralph Hardiek, 41, went to a home on County Road 35 just north of Waterloo to get help for a vehicle they said had been stuck.

Police said two Waterloo officers were sent to find the pair and their vehicle. Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady, 47, encountered the two in the area of Railroad and Center Streets in Waterloo. Police said that's when one of them shot Brady in the face. Brady, a 13 year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department, spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from his wounds.

About three hours later, police said they got a call from a resident in the 200 block of South Center Street indicating that there were some people hiding under his deck. When officers arrived, they found King and Hardiek lying under the deck. Officers said when the pair refused to obey their commands, they used a taser to try to get them to come out. At that time, police said, Hardiek displayed a handgun and pointed it at officers. The officers fired an unknown number of rounds, hitting both King and Hardiek. Hardiek died at the scene.
