FORT RECOVERY, Oh. (WANE) - The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said it is investigating what it believes to be a double homicide after finding a father and daughter bound with duct tape and shot to death near Fort Recovery, Ohio.
Robert Grube, 70 and his daughter Colleen Grube, 47, were found dead at 2216 Burrville Road, just east of Fort Recovery, Ohio.
Robert was wheelchair bound and Colleen was his caretaker.
Sheriff' Jeff Grey said in a news conference Thursday that Robert’s daughter-in-law, Cassandra Grube called 911 around 9 a.m. Wednesday when Colleen did not show up at her home to babysit and would not answer her cell phone.
Cassandra told police she last saw Colleen at her house around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Department said the killings must have happened sometime between then and 9 a.m. on Wednesday when Cassandra made the 911 call.
Grey said that when deputies found the Grubes, they also found items scattered around the room as though the attacker was looking for something. However, at this point nothing has been determined to be missing.
There have been other burglaries in the county, said Grey, but he cannot connect the crimes together at this point. He said the burglaries were mostly businesses and taverns. "This is totally different than anything we've had recently or really any time in the past that I can think of," he said.
Deputies also said there was no sign of forced entry, but they are not assuming Robert and Colleen knew their attacker.
Grey said he's confident forensic evidence will solve this crime. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is processing what they found, but Grey said forensics take time.
"Obviously we want to solve it as quickly as possible, but we're also trying to go slow enough that we let the evidence take us and lead us to where were need to be," he said. "As important as it is to make an arrest, it more important to make sure we arrest the right person."
The Sheriff’s Office has established a tip line for anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area or who may have information.
The number is 567-890-TIPS (8477).
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department reminds citizens to keep their houses and vehicles locked and never let strangers in their homes.
