DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) Police have apprehended a DeKalb County inmate who slipped out of handcuffs while being escorted to the jail Wednesday afternoon and ran away.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department said around 2:30 p.m. officers were taking multiple inmates from court to the jail. All of them were handcuffed and chained together. As they approached in the intake door, Shelby Riedel slipped off the handcuffs and ducked around a corner of the jail.
Police responded to a tip that she'd been picked up and taken to a motel in Fort Wayne, but by the time officers got there she was gone.
Around 7:30 p.m., officers caught up with Riedel and took her back into custody.
Riedel was in jail on two drug charges. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, procedures for transporting inmates back and forth from court were not followed and an investigation is underway to determine why.
