FREMONT, Ind. (WANE) - Police said a Fremont man who was arrested for stealing a car slipped one of his handcuffs off and attempted to escape from officers early Sunday morning.

Officers said just after 3:00 a.m., they found Sean Harman, 27, of Fremont, driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier in the night in the 100 block of East Toledo Street in downtown Fremont.

Police said after the arrest, Harman was able to slip one hand out of the handcuffs. He then attempted to escape.

Harman also tried to grab the gun of a Steuben County Sheriff’s deputy and disarm him, according to police.

Officers at the scene were able to subdue Harman and prevent his escape.

Harman was charged with:

  • Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement
  • Class B felony attempted escape from custody
  • Class B misdemeanor false reporting
  • Class C felony attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer
  • Class D felony auto theft

Harman was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant out of Warrick County. Police said additional charges may be filed.

Harman is being held at the Steuben County Jail on a $78,505 bond and a hold for Warrick County.
