HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A 15-year-old boy from Cadillac, Michigan stole a car, ran out of gas on I-69, then attempted to escape from police on Thursday.

Authorities said stolen property, including a loaded .38 caliber handgun, laptop computer, a router, and a cell phone, were found in the stolen car. Vicodin pills were also found in the glove box.

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Donald Stoffel transported the boy to a waiting area in the administrative area of the Huntington County Jail to await transportation to a youth detention facility in a nearby county.

Police said the boy then fled out the side door of the administrative area and jumped into a nearby river. He was caught by employees of a nearby restaurant who saw officers chasing the boy.

The youth will be housed in a secure detention facility until Friday morning.

A hearing will be held in the Huntington County Circuit Court to determine the boy's extradition back to Michigan.
