MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - A small salamander found only in southwestern Indiana could win protection under a proposal to add it to the state's endangered species list.
The mole salamander was found at the Twin Swamps Nature Preserve near Mount Vernon, Ind., in 2004. Purdue University wildlife professor Rod Williams tells the Evansville Courier & Press it's the only Indiana population wildlife officials know of right now.
The Indiana Natural Resources Commission voted to approve a proposal to place the salamander on the endangered list this month as part of a four-year process.
Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Linnea Petercheff says the proposal must be approved by Attorney General Greg Zoeller and Governor Mitch Daniels before taking effect.
