Company selling spinach balls

Plans to add more varieties

A couple of entrepreneurs are hoping to cash in on an appetizer they've started selling in northeast Indiana. Trina and Ramesh Khadoo have started The Spinach Ball Company to sell a unique food product, spinach balls.

The spinach balls are a new version of a popular appetizer served at the former Herb Garden Restaurant in Fremont. The original recipe was created by Trina’s mother, Connie Moeller, who served the menu item at their Steuben County restaurant and drew plenty of compliments from their customers. “The spinach balls were a huge success! They appeared on the menu as an appetizer, served with a side of dill dip,” Trina recalls. While the Herb Garden has since closed, a revised spinach ball recipe lives on through the new company.

“Spinach balls are very versatile,” according to the Khadoos. “They can be frozen or refrigerated. Just pop them in the microwave for reheating – or, for larger events, they reheat nicely in the oven, chafing dish or crock pot,” they advise. A variety of flavor choices are being developed that include cheese centers, low-fat ingredients, and other options. “The flavors are a lot different from anything you’ve ever had,” Trina confided in describing their taste. She said the spinach balls, which are packaged with the fresh dill dip, can be served as a side dish or even a light meal, in addition to their traditional use as an appetizer.

The Khadoos currently are selling their spinach balls at the West Main Street Market in Fort Wayne, the Whitley County Farmers Market in Columbia City, and at the Cheeseman’s store in Auburn. They are also available online through the company’s Web site at www.spinachball.com and will eventually be sold at area groceries and specialty stores. Delivery is free of charge for large orders placed in the Fort Wayne area.
