For more than twenty years, Sandy Thomson has been NewsChannel 15’s Chief Weather Specialist for WANE-TV. But Sandy’s weather responsibilities are not just local. She has served as a Councilor for the National Weather Association and has been elected as a National Board Member for NWA twice.
In addition, she has been very active on the NWA Broadcast Meteorology Committee as a panel member, judging and evaluating other weathercasters across the nation who are applicants for the NWA seal certification. She has also served as Chairperson of the Seal Re-certification Committee.
Sandy is a native Hoosier, growing up in Huntington County. Her interest in weather began as a child when her father began teachng her cloud formations and how to forecast by them.
After college she lived a number of years in Whitley County and is currently a resident of Fort Wayne. She obtained her B.S. in Mass Communications from Indiana University with majors in English and Literature and minors in Speech, Theater and Journalism. Prior to her entry into television, previous careers included high school teaching, corporate public relations, small business owner, and fashion & special events’ coordinator for L.S. Ayres.
Sandy has two children, Jennifer and John...and not to be excluded from the family, Cody Wyoming, her fabulous dog rescue. In what little spare time she has, Sandy enjoys spending time with her two grandchildren, Aidan and Delaney, or lighting the fireplace and escaping into a great movie (with cappuccino and ice cream on the side). She has a passion for animals and wildlife and also enjoys working outside and on home improvement projects.
Sandy began her weather career at NewsChannel 15 in April of 1987. While at WANE, she hosted “City Style 15” for nearly eight years and has appeared in numerous commercials and training films. Sandy continues her education in weather through annual NWA conferences & workshops, and even from viewers who often call or stop her around town to relay interesting weather folklore or trivia. “I’m so fortunate and grateful that my job allows me the opportunity to meet so many people and the opportunity for so many new experiences.” says Sandy. "I love my job...every day!" She takes very seriously the station's motto, "Coverage You Can Count On", especially in severe weather situations.
She has a true commitment to the community and spends many volunteer hours involved with speaking engagements and appearances at philanthropic and fund-raising events. “It’s hard to pick just one, but Random Acts of Kindness Week would have to be my personal favorite,” she adds. In addition, Sandy is a recipient of the YWCA Women of Achievement Award, received the Communications and Leadership Award from the Indiana/Kentucky Regional Toastmasters and was so honored to have received the Sagamore of the Wabash from the Governor of Indiana for community service to the State of Indiana. She was also named in 1999 as National Broadcaster of the Year by NWA. She also has a personal commitment to serve as an advocate for Autism Awareness.
Sandy can be seen weeknights at 5, 6 & 11pm on NewsChannel 15, WANE-TV.
